Pilot's Closet: Cracking the Check Ride Dress Code

Your check ride is a big day - it's not just about showcasing your flying skills, but also about presenting yourself as a serious and proficient pilot. When preparing for a flight, especially a check ride, it's crucial to remember that piloting an aircraft is not just a mental exercise—it's also a physical activity that involves a range of physical movements. Your clothing choices can significantly impact your comfort and, consequently, your performance in the cockpit.

Unfair as it may be, what you wear can make a significant impression on your examiner and set the tone for your evaluation. Let's break down the perfect outfit that balances professionalism, comfort, and practicality.

First and foremost, don’t sacrifice comfort for style. Opt for shirts with some stretch or a slightly looser fit. The shoulders and arms should allow you to reach overhead without the shirt riding up or restricting movement. A collared polo in a neutral color is always a safe bet. Try the Flightdeck polo. It looks professional without being overly formal. Many brands offer fabrics that are moisture wicking which helps in summer heat.

For your lower half, choose slacks over shorts. Make sure they're comfortable enough for you to move freely in the cockpit. Jeans are fine if paired with an appropriate shirt but may not be as comfortable as slacks with some flexibility. If you prefer skirts, make sure they're knee- length or longer for modesty when climbing in and out of the aircraft.

Footwear is crucial - you need shoes that allow you to feel the rudder pedals properly. Opt for closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles. Avoid high heels, bulky boots, and especially sandals. Sneakers are fine but leave your dirty, worn ones at home. Remember, your shoes should be comfortable for walking during the preflight inspection and secure enough to stay on your feet during flight maneuvers.

Lastly, don't forget to bring a pair your sunglasses. They can help spot traffic when the sun is too bright. And of course, have your documents, log book, medical certificate, and any other required papers readily accessible in a professional-looking folder or flight bag. Remember, the goal is to look capable, prepared, and professional. Your appearance should instill confidence in your examiner before you even start the engine. That said, while professionalism in appearance is important, it should never come at the cost of your ability to operate the aircraft safely and comfortably. By dressing appropriately, you're sending a clear message that you take your role as a pilot seriously and you're ready for the responsibilities that come with it. Striking the right balance will set you up for success in your check ride and future flights.

Good luck on your check ride!
